When you drive a Nissan, you’re protected by a powerful, advanced safety system called Safety Shield 360. This system uses sonar, cameras, and radar that function as additional eyes and ears to identify potential accident risks and warn you so you can prevent them. As your Nissan dealership, we want to tell you how some of these safety features work.
Automatic Emergency Braking w/ Pedestrian Detection
This system uses radar and a camera to scan the road ahead for other vehicles, pedestrians, or animals. If something is detected, the system calculates the distance from your front bumper to the other vehicle’s rear bumper. This distance is then compared to your current speed to determine if an accident risk exists.
You automatically receive visual and audio alerts if the distance is closing too fast, giving you sufficient time to react and avoid a collision. If you’re unable to react in time, the system automatically applies emergency braking to bring your Nissan to an almost instant stop. While automatic braking might not prevent an accident, it will mitigate the damage.
Blind Spot Warning
Changing lanes requires constantly checking your rearview and sideview mirrors to ensure it’s safe. Unfortunately, there are always blind spots you can’t see. Another vehicle can easily enter a blind spot, and you might not see it until it’s too late to prevent a collision. This feature makes lane changing much safer and easier as it uses sonar sensors to monitor all the blind spots.
A warning chime will sound if the sensors detect an approaching vehicle in the neighboring lane. A warning icon that looks like a car inside a triangle will appear on the corresponding side view mirror. This allows you to turn back into your lane or hit the brakes to prevent an accident.
Rear Automatic Braking
When you’re reversing, it is often difficult to easily see stationary objects behind you, particularly if they’re close to the ground. This system uses rear sensors to detect anything behind your vehicle and warn you. You’ll receive audio and visual warnings that rise in tempo as your Nissan closes on the object. This system will also automatically engage the brakes to prevent a collision.
Rear Cross Traffic Alert
This system also uses rear sensors, but they watch the areas to the left and right behind your Nissan. When you shift into reverse, these sensors scan the area for vehicles or pedestrians that might cross your path. A warning icon will appear on the corresponding side view mirror, and you’ll also hear warning sounds. Automatic braking will be engaged if you’re unable to stop in time.
